What Causes Permanent Tooth Discoloration And How Veneers Can Fix It

Yellow, stained and discolored teeth can be a huge cause of embarrassment. Tooth discoloration is the reason many people spend a small fortune on whitening toothpastes, dental rinses and teeth trays. However, for some people dealing with permanent tooth discoloration, over the counter tooth whitening products will not work. Learn why some tooth discoloration is permanent and what you can do about it.

Tooth Discoloration Can Begin During Childhood

Discolored teeth in young children is common and can be caused by a variety of external factors, one common one being medications. Children given the antibiotics tetracycline or doxycycline up to the age of eight can experience a permanent brownish gray tooth discoloration. If you suffered tooth trauma as a child, you may have had to live with blackish stains on your teeth due to the accumulation of hemoglobin during the traumatic injury. If you have had severe tooth discoloration for as long as you can remember, your dentist can help you stop living with tooth discoloration using dental veneers.

Disease Can Cause Permanent Tooth Discoloration

People dealing with metabolic issues like poor calcium absorption can experience tooth discoloration. Chicken pox and some streptococcal infections can also cause tooth discoloration. Usually, tooth stains caused by medical problems is permanent and reaches throughout the dentin and tooth layers, meaning traditional tooth whitening techniques will not work. Dental veneers are the best choice for erasing deep stains that reach further than the enamel.

Some Tooth Discoloring Factors Can Be Avoided

If you smoke or drink a lot of tea, soda or coffee, you may have tooth discoloration because of these habits. In some people, the stains caused by smoking are permanent and do not respond to over the counter tooth whitening products or the traditional steps used by a dental professional for whitening. If you smoke, stopping can not only help to reduce discolored teeth, it can also help you avoid other diseases that would greatly affect the health of your teeth.

No Painful Surgery

You may wonder how veneers can help you be free of tooth stains while other methods are useless. Dental veneers work because they cover the entire face of the tooth. The cosmetic dental procedure for putting on veneers is not long and there is generally no pain involved as well. Dental veneer cosmetic procedures do not require surgery to be successful.

If you cannot smile in front of other people because you do not want them to see the stains on your teeth, the time has come for you to seek the advice of a dental professional about veneers. About Me

Every Dentist Needs Your Help Keeping Your Teeth Healthy

When I was a child and teenager, I always left the dentist's office with the great feeling of having no cavities. When I went away to college out-of-state, I had to switch to a new dentist in my area. It seemed like I was suddenly getting cavities and started wonder what my new dentist "was doing wrong". When I spoke to my mother about it, she reminded me that the reason I never had cavities when I was living it home was because she always made sure my siblings and I brushed and flossed daily and didn't eat too much sugar. I then realized that my late-night study sessions drinking sugary soda and my suddenly bad brushing habits were the true causes of my cavities. I have since learned a lot more about dental health I am eager to share with anyone who needs the advice!
